Oki Electric Cable Co., Ltd. (President: Masasuke Kishi, Head Office: Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa-ken, hereafter referred to as Oki Electric Cable) has developed the "HS-Link Movable Cable" featuring support for HS-Link (*1), the new interface for machine vision (*2)products such as image inspection equipment, as well as 24Gbps high-speed transmission and superior movability. Oki Electric Cable will commence sales of this product for the image inspection systems market in January 2014.

Camera resolutions have increased significantly in recent years as a result of miniaturization and diversification of inspection subjects, a variety of high-speed interfaces are being adopted by image inspection equipment. Camera Link (*3) offers the highest transmission speed (6Gbps) among the interfaces being adopted today. However, HS-Link, the next-generation Camera Link standard featuring higher transmission speeds, is becoming increasingly popular in concert with the growing needs for higher image resolutions.

This product has a flat design for superior flexibility and easy handling, utilizing the flat cable manufacturing technique accumulated from the development and manufacturing of cable products for FA (*4). The cable's structure ensures uniformity along its length to be maintained with use, delivering stable and high-speed transmission performance. Moreover, the product has demonstrated a durability of over 3 million times in sliding/bending (*5) fatigue tests as well as high-speed transmission performance, making it suitable for applications with especially high precision requirements, such as in component mounting equipment, visual inspection systems, medical inspection equipment and semiconductor/LCD steppers.

In future, Oki Electric Cable will continue to actively develop machine vision cables that will accommodate the diversifying customer needs.

Glossary of terms

  • *1:HS-Link

An interface standard for machine vision systems set by AIA (Automated Imaging Association), the machine vision industry association in the United States. HS-Link cables use connectors with a screw lock that is designed to prevent accidental unplugging. The maximum transmission speed is 24Gbps (3Gbps x 8 pairs).

  • *2:Machine vision

Machine vision systems are used in devices such as component mounting equipment and product label printers to check the product appearance and printing defects using one or more cameras, light source, image capture device, image processing equipment, etc.

  • *3:Camera Link

An interface standard set by AIA in 2000. It is adopted by a large number of camera and board manufacturers and is the dominating digital interface for machine vision systems today.

  • *4:FA (Factory Automation)

FA is a system that aims to automate production lines by assigning tasks previously completed by humans to machines such as industrial robots.

  • *5:Sliding/bending

Repetitive reciprocating movement of the cable while bending it in a U-shape and sliding it linearly.
